STANAG 6001 Level 3 – Writing Task (Memo): Destruction of E-3 Sentry AWACS Aircraft at Coalition Airbase
Examination task
Write a minimum of 120 words on the topic below.
An E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft was damaged during a coordinated missile and drone attack on a forward coalition airbase in the Middle East. The aircraft was parked on the ground at the time of the incident. The attack has raised concerns about force protection and the vulnerability of high-value assets. You are a staff officer at headquarters. Write a memo to your Commanding Officer in which you:
- describe the incident,
- report on current security and investigation measures,
- assess the operational impact on surveillance and command-and-control capabilities.

Subject: Destruction of E-3 Sentry AWACS Aircraft at Coalition Airbase
- This memorandum reports the destruction of an E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft during a coordinated missile and drone attack on a coalition airbase in the Middle East. The aircraft was parked on the ground at the time of the strike, and its rear fuselage was completely burned out and destroyed. The attack also left a few service members injured; no fatalities were reported. Additional coalition aircraft and base infrastructure sustained damage and are currently under assessment. Debris was scattered across the surrounding area. Initial indications suggest a coordinated strike designed to target high-value assets.
- Security forces have secured the airbase, and recovery operations are ongoing. Engineering teams are conducting damage assessment and debris clearance, while intelligence personnel are analysing radar data, communications logs, and other available sensor information. A formal investigation has been initiated to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, with particular focus on force protection measures, aircraft dispersal procedures, and air defence effectiveness. Interim security measures have been reinforced to reduce vulnerability to further attacks.
- The loss of the E-3 Sentry reduces airborne early warning capability in the short term, limiting the detection, tracking, and coordination of responses to aerial threats. Situational awareness is temporarily degraded, increasing reliance on ground-based radar systems and the remaining AWACS fleet. This places additional strain on command-and-control structures. In light of the incident, there is a clear requirement to invest in hardened aircraft shelters and improved base protection measures to reduce the vulnerability of critical assets.
