Introduction
This report provides information about a rescue mission conducted to recover the crew of a Mirage 2000 aircraft that crashed in central Mali.
Time, Date and Location
The mission took place on 20 July 2021 at approximately 11:00 hours over hostile territory in central Mali. A Mirage 2000, suffering a technical failure, crashed in an uninhabited area during a support mission. The pilot and navigator safely ejected.
Unit Actions
Our unit was tasked with conducting a combat search and rescue operation. A helicopter team was deployed to search for the downed crew. After establishing the crash area, aerial search operations were conducted. The crew had been transmitting encrypted signals using satellite-linked survival devices, enabling real-time tracking of their positions.
Problem and Solution
During the operation, the helicopter encountered heavy enemy small-arms fire, which delayed landing. Suppressive fire was provided, allowing the helicopter to land safely and complete the extraction.
Crew Condition
Both crew members were conscious, but the pilot showed minor injuries. First aid was provided on site, and the pilot was transported to a field hospital in Gao for further treatment.
Conclusion
The mission was successfully completed despite enemy resistance, and both crew members were safely recovered.
