STANAG 6001 Level 2 – Writing Task (Report): Patrol Ambush in Palmyra, Syria

Examination task

Write a report to your commanding officer. Write between 150-200 words.

You are on a mission abroad. You and your fellow soldiers were patrolling your area of responsibility when you were attacked by a group of militants. Write a report describing the incident. Include the following:

  • give time, date, number of soldiers involved
  • describe the area where the attack happened
  • describe how your patrol members dealt with the situation
  • recommend how to prepare for similar situations in a better way

Subject: Report on Patrol Ambush in Palmyra, Syria

Introduction

This report describes an ambush incident that occurred during a patrol mission in support of ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

Time, Date and Personnel

The incident took place on Saturday, 13 December 2025, at approximately 15:40. The patrol consisted of 9 personnel, including 8 soldiers and 1 civilian interpreter.

Description of the Area

The attack occurred in the city of Palmyra, Syria. The area is urban with damaged infrastructure, narrow streets, and limited visibility, which creates favourable conditions for ambushes.

Description of the Incident and Actions Taken

During the patrol, a single ISIS gunman opened fire on the unit. The patrol immediately returned fire and took cover. The attacker was neutralized within minutes. Despite the quick reaction, two soldiers and one civilian interpreter were killed, and three soldiers were wounded. Medical evacuation was requested without delay. Helicopters transported the wounded personnel to a military base in southern Syria. The area was secured, and follow-on forces were deployed.

Recommendations

It is recommended to conduct more detailed route reconnaissance and increase force protection measures. Improved coordination with Syrian forces is also advised, where operationally feasible.

Conclusion

The patrol reacted professionally; however, the incident resulted in significant casualties. The situation is currently under investigation.
