Introduction
The purpose of this report is to assess the current security situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and evaluate the role of EUFOR Operation Althea in maintaining regional stability. Although the Bosnian War ended in 1995 with the Dayton Peace Agreement, political divisions and ethnic tensions continue to affect the country. Recent separatist statements by political leaders in Republika Srpska and increasing Russian influence in the region have raised concerns about long-term stability.
Current Situation
Bosnia and Herzegovina remains politically fragile due to divisions between Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs. Political disagreements frequently delay reforms and weaken state institutions. Nationalist rhetoric has intensified in recent years, particularly in Republika Srpska, where some leaders have openly discussed greater autonomy or possible independence.
In addition, foreign actors, particularly Russia, have attempted to expand their political influence in the Western Balkans, which may further destabilise the region. Although the immediate security situation remains under control, tensions continue to create uncertainty.
Role of EUFOR Althea
EUFOR Althea was launched in 2004 as the successor to NATO’s SFOR mission. Its primary mission is to maintain a safe and secure environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina and ensure compliance with the Dayton Peace Agreement.
The mission is headquartered at Camp Butmir near Sarajevo and currently involves military personnel from 25 contributing nations, including Poland, EU Member States and non-EU partners. This multinational force can be rapidly reinforced if the security situation deteriorates. It also supports the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina through training activities and maintains reserve forces that can be deployed rapidly if security conditions worsen.
Potential Risks
If political tensions increase, Bosnia and Herzegovina could face protests, interethnic violence, institutional paralysis, or attempts to undermine state authority. A weakened security environment could also encourage external actors to increase their influence in the region.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is seeking membership in NATO and is also a potential candidate for accession to the European Union. Continued instability could negatively affect neighbouring countries and hinder its progress toward accession to both organizations.
Recommendations
To maintain stability, EUFOR should continue regular patrols, intelligence monitoring, and joint exercises with local armed forces. The European Union should also support political dialogue between ethnic groups and encourage institutional reforms.
Furthermore, rapid reaction forces should remain available in case the security situation deteriorates unexpectedly.

In conclusion, EUFOR Althea continues to play a vital role in preserving peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite improvements since the end of the war, political tensions remain a serious concern.
