Subject: Incident at RAF base Akrotiri – Threat Assessment and Preventive Measures

  1. The incident involved a one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicle which struck the base runway at approximately midnight local time, causing limited damage and no casualties. Parts of the UAV have been recovered and are under investigation to determine the origin and technical characteristics of the system. Two additional UAVs approaching the base were intercepted before entering restricted airspace.
    a) The breach of airspace demonstrates that unmanned aerial systems constitute an asymmetric and credible threat to critical military infrastructure.
    b) Ongoing analysis of recovered components may support improvements in detection and counter-UAS capabilities.
  2. Immediate countermeasures were implemented to ensure force protection and operational continuity. Force protection procedures were reinforced, and non-essential personnel movements were restricted as a precautionary measure. Family members of military personnel were relocated to alternative accommodation in Limassol until the security situation stabilises. Runway operations were temporarily suspended for inspection, while essential duties continued without significant disruption.
    a) These measures reduced risk to personnel and preserved operational capability.
    b) Operational schedules were adjusted, but core functions remained unaffected.
  3. To mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future, additional preventive measures are recommended.
    a) Counter-drone capabilities should be enhanced through advanced detection systems and electronic countermeasures.
    b) Enhanced coordination with host-nation authorities and regional partners may improve situational awareness and early warning.
    c) Continuous evaluation of emerging unmanned threats is required to maintain effective personnel and aircraft protection.
