STANAG 6001 Level 3 – Writing Task (Memo): Results of Live-Fire Anti-Drone Exercise with M1 Abrams Tanks
Examination task
Write a minimum of 120 words on the topic below.
During a scheduled live-fire training exercise involving M1 Abrams main battle tanks, your unit conducted trials of defensive systems designed to counter unmanned aerial threats. The exercise focused on testing target detection, tracking, and neutralisation of small unmanned aerial vehicles simulating battlefield conditions.
You have been asked to write a memo to your Commanding Officer in which you:
- describe the purpose and conduct of the exercise,
- explain the performance of the systems tested, including drone detection and engagement,
- provide recommendations for improving protection against UAV threats in the future.

Subject: Results of Live-Fire Anti-Drone Exercise with M1 Abrams Tanks
- The purpose of this memorandum is to report on the live-fire training exercise conducted with M1 Abrams main battle tanks. The aim of the exercise was to evaluate the effectiveness of defensive systems against unmanned aerial threats under controlled conditions. Small unmanned aerial vehicles were used to simulate potential reconnaissance and attack drones. The tanks also practised the use of smoke grenades to reduce visibility and improve concealment during movement and engagement.
- During the exercise, the tank crews demonstrated good overall performance in detecting and tracking drone targets. Most UAVs were successfully identified and engaged at medium range. The active protection systems reacted appropriately in several simulated threat scenarios. However, effectiveness was reduced when drones approached at very low altitude and high speed. The use of smoke screens helped to disrupt drone observation and targeting.
- It is recommended to improve training focused on rapid response to UAV threats and to enhance coordination between detection and weapon systems. Further emphasis should be placed on countering multiple simultaneous drone attacks. Additionally, the integration of dedicated short-range anti-drone systems should be considered in order to increase the survivability of armoured units.
