Subject: Commando Training at Fort Penthièvre
- This memorandum provides an overview of a commando training course conducted at Fort Penthièvre, France. A total of 29 soldiers participated in the training, and all participants successfully completed the course. The programme commenced with a 6-kilometre commando march on wet sand, to be completed within 45 minutes, with soldiers carrying personal weapons and a 9-kilogram load. This was followed by obstacle crossing drills, climbing and abseiling exercises, casualty evacuation tasks, kayak operations in adverse water conditions, and a night-time tactical mission. The primary objective was to develop individual endurance, technical proficiency, and group cohesion under physically and mentally demanding conditions.
- The training had a significant positive impact on both individual performance and unit cohesion. Soldiers were consistently challenged beyond their normal limits, which improved resilience, confidence, and adaptability. The requirement to complete tasks as a group reinforced mutual support, discipline, and accountability. Despite fatigue and harsh environmental conditions, all participants maintained high levels of effectiveness and successfully completed all assigned tasks.
- It is recommended to implement similar training modules within our unit in order to further enhance operational readiness. In particular, exercises combining physical strain with teamwork and tactical decision-making should be prioritised. Regular repetition of such training, supported by qualified instructors, would contribute to long-term improvement in cohesion and combat effectiveness.
