Subject: Ski Training Incident in Mountainous Terrain

  1. This memorandum provides a summary of an incident that occurred on 31 January during a winter training exercise in mountainous terrain. At approximately 10:30 hrs, a soldier from the reconnaissance platoon was injured while conducting a ski patrol along a marked route. According to initial reports, the soldier lost control while descending a steep slope and collided with a tree. The accident was likely caused by a combination of difficult weather conditions, including poor visibility and icy terrain, as well as insufficient experience in advanced ski manoeuvres.
  2. The patrol leader immediately halted the movement and secured the area. A combat medic provided first aid, and the casualty was stabilised before being evacuated by a rescue team to a field medical facility. The soldier sustained a fractured leg but remains in stable condition. As a result of the incident, all ski training activities were temporarily suspended for 12 hours, which led to minor disruptions in the exercise schedule. A safety review was conducted before training resumed.
  3. In order to prevent similar incidents, it is recommended that all personnel undergo additional training in military skiing techniques, particularly in difficult terrain. Furthermore, weather conditions should be more carefully assessed prior to movement, and alternative routes should be considered when risks are elevated. It is also advisable to ensure closer supervision by experienced instructors and to reinforce adherence to safety procedures, including maintaining safe distances between soldiers during descents.
