Sample Briefing
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
First of all, thank you for attending this briefing.
My name is Captain Harris, and I have been tasked with presenting possible ways of dealing with two soldiers who were recently arrested for fighting with American troops following a NATO exercise.
As you are aware, such incidents may negatively affect discipline and relations with our allied forces. Therefore, it is essential to take appropriate and proportional action in response to this situation.
I have divided my briefing into two parts. In the first part, I will discuss the option of imposing financial punishment. In the second part, I will present the possibility of imposing disciplinary restrictions, specifically a 30-day restriction to barracks. Finally, I will recommend the solution which I believe is the most appropriate.
Let me begin with the first option, which is financial punishment.
This solution has several advantages.
Firstly, financial punishment is easy to implement and does not require additional supervision or organisational effort.
Secondly, it sends a clear message to the entire unit that unacceptable behaviour will have consequences. Financial penalties act as a deterrent and discourage similar incidents in the future.
However, this option also has some disadvantages.
To begin with, it may not address the root cause of the problem, such as lack of discipline or poor conflict management.
Additionally, it may negatively affect morale, especially if the soldiers perceive the punishment as unfair or too severe.
I will now move on to the other option, which is a 30-day restriction to barracks.
This solution also offers several advantages.
Firstly, it is a clear and visible form of punishment which directly affects the soldiers’ daily routine.
Secondly, it reinforces discipline by limiting their freedom and holding them accountable for their actions.
On the other hand, there are also some disadvantages to this option.
The main drawback is that it requires monitoring to ensure compliance with the restrictions. The punished soldiers are required to remain on base during their free time and must report to the duty officer three times a day.
Another potential issue is that the soldiers may perceive this punishment as too harsh, particularly given its duration, as they will be confined to the barracks for 30 days.
In conclusion, while both solutions have certain advantages, I would recommend imposing the disciplinary restriction to barracks. Although this option requires some level of supervision, it has a stronger impact on discipline and clearly demonstrates that such behaviour is unacceptable. It also helps maintain order within the unit and reinforces respect for regulations.
This brings me to the end of my briefing.
