Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls, on the border of Canada and the United States, between the Canadian province of Ontario and the American state of New York. There are situated on the Niagara River which flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.

The discovery of the Niagara Falls had its roots in prehistoric times when the indigenous peoples of American lived in the area. The first European to document the existence of Niagara waterfalls was a Father Louis Hennepin, a Franciscan friar born in Belgium and an explorer of North America. During a 1678 expedition, traveling with the French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, he was overwhelmed by the size of Niagara Falls. In 1683, Hennepin published a book called ‘A New Discovery’ and brought Niagara Falls to the attention of the western world for the first time. This discovery inspired further explorers who wanted to see this amazing place.

Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls, is the largest and the most recognizable waterfall. It is in the shape of a horseshoe and belongs in about two-thirds to Canada. It is abt. 53-meter high and abt. 790-meter wide. Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America by water flow rate.

Horseshoe Falls, zwany także Canadian Falls (Wodospad Kanadyjski), jest najszerszym i najbardziej rozpoznawalnym wodospadem. Ma kształt podkowy końskiej i należy w ok. 2/3 do Kanady. Ma ok. 53 metry wysokości i ok. 790 metrów szerokości. Horseshoe Falls jest najpotężniejszym wodospadem w Ameryce Północnej pod względem natężenia przepływu wody.
American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls lie entirely within the United States. American Falls is 320-meter wide and its height varies between 21 and 30 m because of the presence of giant boulders at its base. Compared to Horseshoe Falls, it has more simple and regular shapes.

On the American side, the Observation Tower provides an exceptional view of all waterfalls. Its deck extends out over the gorge. The tower’s height is 86 meters and is constructed of aluminum, glass, and steel. Elevators at the Observation Tower provide access to the base of the gorge and the boarding site for the Maid of the Mist boat tour.

The legendary Maid of the Mist boats depart exclusively from the American side while Niagara City Cruises boats operate from the Canadian side. The boat tours run from April to October depending on the weather conditions. All passengers are given a poncho to keep clothing dry.

Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest of the three waterfalls. It is abt. 34-meter high and abt. 17-meter wide. It is situated text to American Falls and it is separated from it by Luna Island. It is named for the misty veil-like appearance of the waterfall, which is created by the strong winds and steam. The water stream which is flowing down looks like a long, delicate wedding veil.
Bridal Veil Falls (Wodospad Ślubny Welon) jest najmniejszym z trzech wodospadów. Ma ok. 34 metry wysokości i ok. 17 metrów szerokości. Znajduje się obok American Falls i jest oddzielony od niego Księżycową Wyspą (Luna Island). Nazywa się tak z powodu spowitego mgłą i przypominającego welon ślubny wyglądu, tworzonego przez silne wiatry i parę wodną. Spływający strumień wody wygląda jak długi, delikatny welon ślubny.
During the summer months, at least 2,800 m3 per second of water traverse all three falls, some 90% of which goes over Horseshoe Falls. The water flow is halved at night and it attains abt. 1,400 m3 per second during the winter months.

At present, nearly half of water from Niagara waterfalls is used to supply three hydroelectric generating stations, i.e. Sir Adam Beck I, Beck II and Pump Generating Station on the Canadian side, as well as two more stations i.e. Robert Moses Power Plant and Lewiston Pump Generating Plant on the American side. These hydroelectric generating stations divert a part of the river stream above the waterfalls using specially built channels and tunnels. They produce about one quarter of all power used in New York State and Ontario.

To see the Niagara Falls from the American and Canadian sides, tourists may use the border crossing between the United States and Canada situated on the Rainbow Bridge. It is possible to cross the border on foot or by car. The bridge is 61.5 m above the water level and 289.5 meters in length.
