Memo
Subject: Security Incident in the Village of Maroun ar-Ras
- The aim of this memorandum is to inform about a security incident which occurred during an operation conducted jointly with the Lebanese Armed Forces in the village of Maroun ar-Ras. The peacekeepers were providing security for civilian workers clearing the ruins of houses damaged during the recent conflict. At approximately 11:30 a.m., personnel at two separate locations heard a grenade explode near an excavator working about 500 metres from their position. Shortly afterwards, the first group observed a drone flying overhead, followed by an explosion approximately 30–40 metres from their location. About twenty minutes later, the second group witnessed another drone dropping a grenade which detonated roughly 20 metres above their heads.
- UNIFIL had previously informed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) about the planned activity in the area. Immediately after the incident, a request to cease fire was transmitted through established communication channels. Fortunately, no peacekeepers, soldiers, or civilians were injured. Although the explosions temporarily interrupted the work, the clearing operation resumed after the situation stabilised.
- In order to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future, it is recommended to improve coordination and notification procedures with all parties operating in the area. It may also be advisable to review safety measures during engineering works and ensure that peacekeepers maintain increased situational awareness when drones are detected nearby.
