Examination task
Write a minimum of 120 words on the topic below.
While a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was docked at a naval port, a drone of unknown origin was observed taking off from a nearby vessel and entering restricted airspace. Electronic warfare systems were used to disrupt the device.
You have been asked to write a memo to your Commanding Officer in which you:
- describe the incident and assess the potential threat,
- present the countermeasures taken and explain how the incident affected ongoing duties,
- suggest what measures should be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Subject: Unauthorized UAV Incident at the Naval Port
- This memorandum reports an incident involving an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detected in restricted airspace while a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was docked at the naval port. At approximately 14:30 hours, personnel observed the UAV taking off from a nearby vessel and proceeding directly toward the carrier. The device was assessed as a potential reconnaissance platform targeting critical military infrastructure, thus posing a significant force protection concern.
- Electronic warfare systems were immediately activated, and a jamming operation was conducted as the UAV approached the carrier. The disruption of its command and navigation links caused the UAV to disappear from radar and visual contact. It remains unclear whether the device returned to the originating vessel or crashed into the sea. As a precautionary measure, port activities were temporarily restricted and the force protection level was elevated, resulting in minor operational delays.
- It is recommended to enhance counter-UAV surveillance coverage, maintain rapid-response electronic warfare capabilities in the port area, and strengthen coordination with maritime authorities to monitor nearby vessels. Regular counter-drone drills and a review of force protection procedures should be implemented to mitigate similar threats in the future.
