C1 Advanced Essay Writing: New Subjects at School
Example Exam Task
You attended a meeting at a local school where possible new additions to the curriculum were discussed. You have made the notes below:
What subjects can we add to our school curriculum?
- computer programming
- home decoration and repair
- Latin
Some opinions expressed during the meeting:
- ‘We need to consider those who won’t go to university.’
- ‘Learn Latin and you’re halfway to learning any other language.’
- ‘We need to prepare our children for the modern world they live in!’
Write an essay, discussing two of the subjects in your notes. You should explain which subject would help students most, giving reasons in support of your answer.
You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the meeting, but you should use your own words as far as possible.
Example Essay
Our school has recently considered introducing new subjects to the curriculum, with home decoration and repair, as well as computer programming, among the most discussed options. While both subjects offer valuable skills, I believe that computer programming would be the more beneficial choice for students in today’s world.
On the one hand, courses in home decoration and repair could equip students with practical life skills. Learning basic household maintenance, such as plumbing, painting, or assembling furniture, not only helps save money but also fosters independence and self-reliance. As one participant at the meeting observed, ‘We need to consider those who won’t go to university’, highlighting the importance of preparing all students for daily life. Moreover, gaining a practical understanding of maintenance tasks can enhance students’ appreciation of craftsmanship. Nevertheless, these skills, while useful, are unlikely to provide significant advantages in the contemporary job market.
On the other hand, computer programming provides skills that are increasingly essential in the modern world. In an age where digital technologies play a central role in nearly every industry, programming is not just for future software developers; it is a tool that can enhance creativity, improve logical thinking, and even support entrepreneurial initiatives. Furthermore, digital skills are in high demand across various sectors, ensuring that students are better prepared for both higher education and the modern workplace.
In conclusion, while home decoration and repair has clear practical benefits, computer programming offers broader and more long-term advantages. By introducing programming into the curriculum, we can better prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
