Example Exam Task

Your class has listened to a radio discussion about how adults can be a good influence on younger people. You have made the notes below:

Ways adults can influence how younger people behave:

  • giving rules
  • setting an example
  • offering advice

Some opinions expressed in the discussion:

  • “Sometimes it’s fun to break the rules!”
  • “If you admire somebody, you try to behave like them.”
  • “Young people don’t always listen.”

Write an essay discussing two of the ways in your notes that adults can influence younger people’s behaviour. You should explain which way you think is more effective, giving reasons to support your opinion. Write 220 – 260 words in an appropriate style.

You may, if you wish, make use of the opinions expressed in the discussion, but you should use your own words as far as possible.

Example Essay

The behaviour of young people is strongly influenced by the adults around them. Parents, teachers, and other persons play a crucial role in shaping attitudes, habits, and values during childhood and adolescence. While there are various ways in which adults can guide younger people, two of the most effective methods are giving rules and setting an example.

Firstly, giving rules helps young people understand boundaries, showing them what is considered acceptable behaviour. For instance, a parent who enforces a rule about completing homework before watching TV teaches responsibility and time management. Rules also offer a sense of security, as young people know the limits within which they can safely operate. However, strict rules alone may not always be effective, as some young people may feel the urge to rebel. As one opinion from the radio discussion suggested, “sometimes it’s fun to break the rules!” This shows that rules need to be combined with other forms of guidance.

Secondly, setting an example is perhaps even more influential. Young people often imitate those they admire, so adults who demonstrate positive behaviour can inspire similar actions. For example, a teacher who consistently shows kindness and respect encourages students to adopt the same attitudes. This approach is generally lasting, as young people imitate adults out of admiration rather than obligation. The discussion also noted, “If you admire somebody, you try to behave like them,” which clearly illustrates this point.

In my opinion, setting an example is more effective than merely giving rules. While rules provide guidance, observing adults in action teaches young people values and behaviours in a more natural and convincing way. Combining both methods, however, creates the best environment for positive development.
